Sri Chandreshwara Temple

An ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Chandreshwara (Lord of the Moon). According to regional lore, the name "Udupi" is derived from Udu (stars) and Pa (lord), referencing Chandra performing penance here to rid himself of a curse. The temple features compact stone architecture centred around a historic deepasthambha (lamp pillar) in the front courtyard. Every evening, the outer stone perimeter lamps are manually filled with local unrefined coconut oil and hand-rolled cotton wicks, casting a timeless glow over Car Street during the Sandhya Deepa ritual.
