146 Udupi Villages Face Likely Drinking Water Shortage

A recent survey by the Udupi district administration has flagged 146 villages as likely to experience critical drinking water shortages. The alerts come as part of a broader assessment of water infrastructure in the region.

According to the report, the shortage stems from a combination of decreasing groundwater recharge, ageing borewells and irregular rainfall patterns caused by climate change. Several of the affected villages rely heavily on local ponds and hand-dug wells, which are now showing reduced yields and increased contamination risks.

The projected scarcity could have serious repercussions for farmers, leading to lower crop yields and higher costs for irrigation.
