146 Villages in Udupi Risk Drinking Water Shortage Amid Drought

A recent assessment conducted by the Udupi district administration revealed that 146 villages could face a drinking water crisis in the coming months. The alarm stems from extended periods of low rainfall and deteriorating water delivery infrastructure.

The report, which involved field visits to water supply stations, highlighted that many of the affected villages rely on old borewells and shallow hand pumps that have begun to dry up. Local officials also noted that climate change has intensified the variability of monsoon rains, further aggravating the scarcity.

If the shortage persists, residents may have to travel long distances for water, compromising household hygiene and agricultural productivity.
