Consumer Commission Fines Manipal Cigna Over Forced Cardiac Tests During CPR

The Consumer Commission of India (CCI) has fined Manipal Cigna Health & Insurance for demanding cardiac investigations during a cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) procedure, a move deemed detrimental to patient welfare.

The incident occurred in Manipal, a town within Udupi district, when a patient undergoing CPR was reportedly asked by the insurer’s representatives to undergo additional cardiac tests before the resuscitation could be completed. The delay caused by this request potentially jeopardised the patient’s survival, prompting the CCI to intervene.

As a result, CCI imposed a substantial fine on the insurer to deter similar conduct in the future and to reinforce the primacy of immediate patient care over ancillary testing during emergencies.
