Heavy Downpours Across Udupi District Cause Structural Damage and Road Disruptions

Udupi, Karnataka – A week of torrential rainfall that battered Udupi district from 24 to 30 September 2023 has left numerous homes damaged and major roads submerged, raising concerns over infrastructure resilience.

Local media reported that cumulative rainfall exceeded 200 mm across the district, with the Coastal Karnataka climate centre noting a 75 % increase over the long‑term average for this period. Municipal officers in Cheemalu, Kundapura and the Udupi taluk reported roofs caved in, basements flooded and several debris‑filled riverbeds blocking NH216 and the Inner Ring Road.

So far, 12 houses have sustained severe damage and 3,500 residents had to be relocated temporarily, the district administration said.
