Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Cause Extensive Damage in Udupi District

Early Monday, a severe storm battered the Udupi district, striking towns and villages with gale-force winds that tore roofs off houses, uprooted trees and drenched fields in the southern part of Karnataka.

Udupi is a major agricultural hub, producing coconut, paddy, and jackfruit, and the district has experienced some of its heaviest monsoon rainfall in recent history, with several places recording over 250 mm in just 48 hours.

Preliminary reports from local authorities indicate that around 450 homes have sustained structural damage, and crop losses are estimated at roughly ₹50 million.
