Heavy Rain Causes Damage to Homes and Road Closures Across Udupi District

Heavy rains that began on Sunday afternoon have turned several areas of Udupi District into a flood zone, causing water damage to dozens of homes and blocking key roads.

The meteorological department reported that the region received 150-200 mm of rainfall in 24 hours, surpassing the normal seasonal average. Local panchayats were notified on Monday and have begun setting up emergency shelters, while the Udupi municipal office deployed rescue teams along affected stretches.

Housing damage is widespread, with roofs collapsed, plaster peeling, and drainage systems overwhelmed. Governor’s office estimates that at least 200 households have suffered losses and 15 km of roads remain impassable. Rescue teams are operating along 12 road segments where water levels reached up to 1.5 meters. Residents are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and to use designated evacuation routes.
