Heavy rain damages houses and cuts roads in Udupi district

Heavy rainfall across Udupi district in the past 48 hours has left dozens of homes either damaged or completely destroyed and has washed out several main roads, cutting off access to nearby villages.

Located on the southwestern coast of Karnataka, Udupi district features a maritime tropical climate with a pronounced monsoon season that typically brings heavy showers from June to September. This week’s rainfall, which topped 200mm in some areas in a single day, exceeded the average monsoon total by more than 50%, triggering widespread flooding of low‑lying roadways and residential areas.

As a result, relief teams from the district administration have begun debris removal and temporary bridge construction, while residents are being relocated to safe havens.
