Heavy rains and strong winds wreak havoc on houses and crops in Udupi district

A severe weather system slammed Udupi district last night, unleashing heavy rain and gale‑force winds that battered houses and ruined farmlands.
The storm, driven by a low‑pressure system over the Arabian Sea, dumped more than 200 mm of rain in some villages while gusts exceeded 70 km/h. Local authorities report that several thatched roofs were torn off and drainage in coastal towns collapsed, aggravating flood risk.
Farmers in Byndoor, Kundapura and Udupi towns reported loss of rice, coconut and areca nut crops, with preliminary figures estimating damage to over 500 ha.
