The central and southern parts of Udupi district were hit by a severe cyclone-like storm on Tuesday, bringing torrential rainfall that topped 200 millimetres and gale-force winds reaching up to 70 kilometres per hour. The sudden deluge caused extensive damage to residential structures, with several houses in the towns of Canare, Karkala, and Kaup reported collapsed roofs and uprooted trees.

The storm not only affected human habitation but also wreaked havoc on the region’s agricultural produce. Paddy fields in the Kodavu region were flooded, while coconut and banana plantations in the Arabian‑sea-facing hinterlands suffered extensive leaf loss and root damage.
