Heavy rains damage homes, disrupt road connectivity across Udupi district

Heavy rains that began late last week have left dozens of houses damaged and major roads in the Udupi district closed to traffic.

Amid unusually high precipitation expected due to the southwest monsoon, villages such as Karkala, Kundapura and Byndoor reported widespread flooding. Local residents say that water levels rose rapidly, washing away portions of village streets and submerging several homes, prompting many to seek refuge in nearby schools and temples. The Ghogol and Udupi–Karkala roads, vital for commuters and traders, were severed by washed-out culverts and landslides.

The district administration has dispatched teams of engineers and water pumps to clear blockages and assess structural damage. Traffic authorities have declared the affected stretch toll-free for emergency vehicles and are installing temporary barriers to keep pedestrians safe.
