Heavy rains damage houses, cut off roads across Udupi district

Udupi district was battered by heavy rainfall on Saturday, with storm clouds lingering over coastal areas and even inland towns, leaving a trail of flooded streets and damaged homes.

Meteorological data from the India Meteorological Department recorded up to 120 mm of rain over 24 hours in some areas, breaking previous monsoon records for the region. The intense downpour came during the peak of the long‑type monsoon, amplifying the risks of landslides and flash floods.

Numerous houses in hill villages and coastal hamlets suffered structural damage, with roofs blown off and water ingress in multiple rooms. Key roads such as the Panruti‑Udupi link, and the stretch from Kundapur to Madikeri were partially submerged, cutting off transit between towns. Rescue teams and the State Disaster Response Fund have begun clearing debris, but thousands of residents remain stranded and rely on relief centers for basic supplies.
