Heavy rains revive Nethravathi, Kumaradhara rivers; Udbhava Linga submerged in Uppinangady

Heavy monsoon rains over Uppinangady in Udupi District have swollen the Nethravathi and Kumaradhara rivers, restoring their flow after months of low water levels. Residents noted that the rivers, which had stagnated during the dry period, now carry clean water, indicating a temporary positive revival of the region’s riverine ecosystem.

These rivers have long been vital for irrigation, domestic use and local fisheries; their resurgence comes amid growing concern over water scarcity. The sudden rise in water also immersed the Udbhava Linga, a small stone shrine that has been a focal point for local devotees, leading to vandalisation of the site and disruption of religious practices.

While officials see the revived flow as a relief for farmers, they caution that the sudden water surge could pose risks of flooding in low-lying areas.
