Karkala waste units record spike in fire incidents, authorities warn

In the past year, Karkala’s municipal waste processing units have experienced five fire incidents, a significant jump from the three recorded last year. The most recent blaze, which broke out on September 14, caused extensive damage to the composting area and triggered the evacuation of nearby residential blocks.

Waste management units in coastal Karnataka typically store large amounts of paper, plastic, and food waste, all of which pose fire hazards if not stored properly. While Karkala is known for its rapid infrastructure development, the rapid expansion of dumping facilities has outpaced the implementation of adequate fire‑breaks and sprinkler systems. Officials noted that older buildings and stacked bales of untreated waste create tinderboxes, especially during the dry summer months.

The fires have not yet resulted in any fatalities, but several workers suffered minor burns, and the damage is estimated at over ₹2 million. “We are conducting a comprehensive review of all safety protocols and will be installing advanced fire‑suppressing equipment by the end of the year,” said municipal spokesperson Hari Krishna.
