Man Saved from Cardiac Arrest at Kasturba Hospital Using ECMO Support

In a remarkable display of modern cardiac medicine, a patient who went into cardiac arrest in the emergency ward of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, was successfully revived using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support. The prompt intervention by the hospital’s cardiac team prevented what could have been a fatal outcome.

ECMO, a life‑support technique that oxygenates the blood outside the body, is rarely used in the region. Kasturba Hospital, part of the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, has recently upgraded its critical care unit to include a dedicated ECMO setup, positioning it among the few facilities in Karnataka capable of providing such advanced therapy. The patient, who was stabilized after the procedure, is now in stable condition under close observation.
