Manipal Hospitals, backed by Temasek, files $1bn IPO in India

By ETF Desk

On Tuesday, Manipal Hospitals Ltd. announced that it has filed the requisite documentation to launch a ₹7.5 billion ($1 billion) initial public offering in India. The filing marks the first time the hospital chain, which is part of the larger Manipal Group, is seeking to raise fresh capital from the domestic market.

Manipal Hospitals has grown from a single facility in 1972 into a 15‑hospital network with a presence across Karnataka, including the city of Udupi. The listing comes after Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund Temasek increased its stake to 12.7 % in the company, which it had previously acquired for $70 million. The public‑market debut follows a wave of healthcare listings in India, as the sector seeks to tap investor appetite for long‑term growth driven by rising health awareness and an expanding middle class.

Capital raised from the IPO will be used to fund infrastructure upgrades, expand into new locations, and invest in digital health initiatives. Analysts predict the listing could set a benchmark for other private hospital groups aiming to seek Indian capital, while providing shareholders an exit route and boosting investor confidence in the country’s healthcare market.
