Manipal University Jaipur Marks 25 Years of Wikipedia: A Celebration of Learning and Innovation

On Thursday, 28 March 2024, Manipal University Jaipur hosted a grand celebration to mark the 25th anniversary of Wikipedia. The campus was abuzz with students, faculty, and local collaborators who gathered for a series of workshops, a showcase of Wikipedia contributions, and keynote speeches from prominent Wikimedia volunteers.

Wikipedia was first introduced to the university’s curriculum in 2000, quickly becoming a staple resource for research, collaborative editing and digital literacy. Over the past decade and a half, more than 500 students and 40 faculty members have contributed to the platform, creating thousands of articles in regional languages such as Kannada, Urdu, and Kashmiri.

The anniversary event underscored the impact of Wikipedia on higher education by highlighting success stories like the “Udupi Heritage” series, which has attracted researchers from across Karnataka. Speakers emphasized that the open‑source model fosters innovation, critical thinking and community engagement, while the university announced plans to launch a dedicated Wikiversity program in 2025 to further integrate Wikimedia resources into its curriculum.
