Minister pledges ₹1 crore to Udupi Pejawar Mutt for green cover

The Minister for Rural Development announced a ₹1 crore grant aimed at increasing the green cover around the Pejawar Mutt in Udupi district. This funding will be used for tree planting, creating a community garden, and restoring degraded areas around the ancient temple complex.

The Pejawar Mutt, located in the coastal town of Udupi, is a prominent centre of worship and local culture. Over the years, changing climate and urban encroachment have reduced its natural canopy, prompting local leaders to seek government support for ecological revitalisation.

With the new funding, the mutt will plant over 5,000 saplings across its premises, install rain‑water harvesting systems and undertake waste‑to‑energy projects, officials say.
