Monsoon‑Driven Surge in Dengue, Malaria and Respiratory Illnesses Hits Udupi

The recent monsoon rains in Udupi district have triggered a noticeable uptick in disease cases, with a 35% rise in dengue and malaria, and a sharp increase in influenza‑like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory infections (SARI), according to local health officials.

Udupi, known for its coastal wetlands, becomes an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes during monsoon, while the high humidity and rainfall also facilitate the spread of respiratory pathogens. The district has already reported 1,200 dengue cases this year, up from 800 last year.
