Police Arrest Man Suspected of Stealing Jewelry from Deceased Woman in Udupi

A man was taken into custody by the Udupi Police on Monday after evidence of jewelry was found on the body of a woman who had recently died in the district.
Local investigators first noticed a string of earrings and a necklace on the deceased’s body when the body was being prepared for a post‑mortem at the Udupi Medical College. The ornaments, reportedly a mix of gold and semi‑precious stones, were said to have been removed from the woman’s possession just days before her death.
The officer in charge, Superintendent of Police Dr. H. N. Suresh, said the arrest was made following a rapid inquiry that traced the jewellery to a suspect named R. M. Veerappa, who is a known associate of some catering staff in the area. Police are now reviewing CCTV footage and questioning witnesses to establish whether the theft was a deliberate act or an accidental discovery after the body’s removal.
