Rare Mahishamardhini Sculpture Unearthed in Ruined Udupi Temple

In a striking find, a nearly intact statue of Mahishamardhini — a fierce incarnation of the goddess Durga — was uncovered during an excavation of a ruined 12th‑century temple in Udupi district, Karnataka.

The statue, carved in basalt and depicting the goddess with her typical eight arms and garula, is the first of its kind discovered in the region and offers a rare glimpse into early regional devotional art.
