Udupi Air Quality Remains Poor Amidst Rising National Pollution Levels

In a recent report released by IQAir, the coastal city of Udupi recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) that falls into the unhealthy range, indicating significant levels of fine particulate matter that pose health risks for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions.

The IQAir data show PM2.5 concentrations exceeding 55 µg/m³ and PM10 levels above 80 µg/m³, surpassing the World Health Organization’s recommended limits. The spike is attributed to local vehicular traffic, industrial emissions from nearby manufacturing units and seasonal crop burning in adjoining districts.

Health officials in Udupi are urging residents to limit outdoor activities during peak pollution hours and to use air purifiers at home. The district administration has responded by announcing plans to monitor emission sources more closely and to introduce stricter vehicle exhaust regulations, while also encouraging citizens to adopt cleaner modes of transport.
