Udupi Airport Considered Only if State Proposes, Says Civil Aviation Ministry

The Ministry of Civil Aviation has indicated that any plans to construct an airport in Udupi district will be contingent upon a formal proposal from the Karnataka state government. The statement was made in a press release amid growing calls for improved air links to the coastal district.

Udupi, located on the Arabian Sea coastline, is currently served by the proximity of Mangalore International Airport roughly 110 km away. Local leaders and tourism bodies have long advocated for a closer air terminal to boost tourism and trade, but state approval remains a prerequisite for any such infrastructure project.

If approved, an airport could reduce travel time for tourists and business travelers, stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and support the region’s fishing and spice export sectors.
