Udupi deploys speed radar at six highways to curb speeding

In a bid to enhance road safety, the Udupi district administration has made speed radar cameras operational at six major highway stretches. The measures were inaugurated yesterday at 06:30 hours, with the first camera installed on the NH‑66 corridor near Jogapur.

The cameras, installed under a project funded by the state government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), are expected to monitor driver speeds on heavily trafficked segments of NH‑66, NH‑65, and the Panathur–Udupi route. Previous reports indicated that speeding was a major factor in accident clusters along these roads, prompting authorities to pursue technology‑driven enforcement.

Officials predict that the new system will deter motorists from exceeding posted limits, potentially cutting the number of speed‑related crashes by up to 25% in the coming year.
