Udupi District Identifies 146 Villages at Risk of Drinking Water Shortage

Authorities in Udupi district have flagged 146 villages as highly vulnerable to potable water shortages, according to a recent assessment report released Thursday.

The report cites factors such as erratic rainfall, aging irrigation infrastructure, and over‑extraction of groundwater as key contributors to the projected deficits. 146 villages, spread across six talukas, were listed based on their current water availability indices and projected demand growth.

Local residents could face water rationing, increased reliance on purchased water, and potential health risks. The district administration has pledged to expedite the planning of new pipelines and water conservation projects.
