Udupi doctor arrested over alleged child‑adoption fraud

In a sting operation that unfolded on Tuesday, a leading Udupi‑based physician, Dr. Ramesh Kumar, was taken into custody along with another person accused of orchestrating a child‑adoption racket.
According to police statements, the duo allegedly solicited families who could not afford modern medical care, promising permanent homes for their children in return for a payment of ₹1.5 lakh. Authorities say the pair used the doctor’s clinic as a front to vet and present photos of suitable “adoptable” children to prospective parents.
The arrest has raised alarms among local media and the community, with many questioning the safeguards around private adoption procedures in Karnataka. The National Family Welfare Department has issued a reminder that any adoption must be processed through legally recognised channels and that medical practitioners cannot be intermediaries.
