Udupi enjoys good rains, but orange alert warns farmers of potential crop damage

Good rains fell across Udupi district this week, boosting the harvest prospects for farmers, but the local agricultural office has issued an orange alert warning of potential crop damage due to heavy downpours.

During the past week rainfall over the coastal region of Udupi approached 200-250mm, surpassing average monthly patterns and providing much-needed moisture for paddy fields, coconut groves and emerging vegetables.

Despite the positive effect, the orange alert signals that excessive rainfall could cause waterlogging, root rot and reduced yields in certain crops, prompting authorities to advise farmers to adopt mitigation measures such as drainage, mulching and timely harvesting.
