Udupi Introduces Fines for Neglecting Mosquito Control Amid Dengue Surge

As part of public health measures, the Udupi municipality has announced that it will impose fines on any property that fails to eliminate stagnant water that fosters mosquito breeding, responding to a recent surge in dengue infections in the district.
The notice, issued by the district public health wing, states that a fine of ₹5,000 will be levied per property that does not clear mosquito larvae within 14 days after receiving a notice. It follows WHO recommendations and follows the 2023-24 dengue season, during which Udupi recorded over 900 confirmed cases. Municipal officials say the fine aims to deter negligence and encourage collective efforts in cleaning containers, flower pots, discarded tires, and other potential breeding sites.
Public health experts warn that failure to curb mosquito breeding could spark a third wave of dengue, overwhelming the district’s limited healthcare resources. Authorities urge residents to comply, noting the recent jump to 1,257 reported cases and 42 deaths across Dakshina Kannada. “Our goal is to turn Udupi into a dengue‑free zone,” said the district health officer.
