Udupi Livestock Numbers Drop 23% Amid Rising Alarms

A reported 23% decline in livestock numbers was recorded in Udupi district this year, according to figures released by local authorities. The drop has bruised the confidence of farmers who rely on cattle and goats for both livelihood and sustenance.

Experts attribute the sudden fall to a combination of factors, including erratic monsoon patterns, increased prevalence of animal diseases, and a sharp rise in feed costs. The lack of adequate veterinary services in rural pockets has left many smallholders vulnerable, while reduced pasture availability has compounded the problem.
