On 15 March, a resident of Udupi (name withheld for privacy) used his debit card to pay for a surgical procedure at a local hospital. When he later checked his bank statement, he noticed a withdrawal of Rs 212,000—an amount far greater than the bill he had paid.
The hospital’s billing system has been under scrutiny since the complaint was filed. Hospital officials have said they are reviewing the transaction logs and will cooperate with the bank and the Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum. Meanwhile, the customer has approached the RBI’s debit card helpline and files a formal grievance under the Payment Card Industry data security standards.
The case highlights the need for greater transparency in medical billing and caution for patients to verify statements promptly. Local consumers are urged to keep receipts and review all debit card activity to detect discrepancies early. The matter is under investigation by both the district consumer court and the banking regulator. Source: Google News – Udupi.
