Udupi Man Loses Rs 212,000 From Debit Card After Hospital Payment

Mr. Naveen Kumar, a resident of Ullal in Udupi District, reported that his bank debit card was debited by Rs 212,000 after he had paid for treatments at the Udupi Municipal Hospital.
The unauthorized transaction was noticed on 20 April 2024, several days after Mr. Kumar had recorded a legitimate medical bill of just under Rs 4,500 for a routine check‑up. He immediately contacted the bank, which confirmed that the amount had been withdrawn by an unknown merchant. The bank has initiated a formal dispute and is cooperating with the local police and the Reserve Bank of India to trace the source of the fraud.
Mr. Kumar’s case highlights a growing concern over card fraud in the region, especially when patients use bank cards for hospital payments.
