Udupi Police Deploy New Surveillance Cameras to Combat Traffic Violations

Udupi police have rolled out a new generation of surveillance cameras—known locally as ‘NPR’ cameras—across 15 of the city’s busiest junctions to strengthen traffic law enforcement.

The cameras, supplied by the state’s transport department, offer 4K video resolution and incorporate artificial‑intelligence software that automatically flags speeding, illegal turns and red‑light violations. Deployment began on 5 March 2024, with technicians working round the clock to integrate the footage into a central monitoring hub.

Since their installation, the police have issued over 1,500 traffic tickets and reported a 20% rise in recorded infractions, according to Commissioner Shankar K. Kumar.
