Udupi Police Use NPR Cameras to Cut Traffic Violations

Udupi police have deployed a network of NPR cameras across major intersections and busy lanes, marking a new chapter in the district’s traffic management efforts.

The plinth, unveiled last month, employs real‑time video surveillance that captures violations such as illegal turns, wrong‑way driving and speeding, allowing officers to issue notices on the spot. Officials say the move was prompted by a spike in traffic-related complaints and a need to ensure a prompt, evidence‑based approach to enforcement.

According to Inspector R. Kumar, the program has already led to a 20% reduction in traffic infractions and a 15% rise in fine collections since its roll‑out. Earlier this year, 1,200 tickets were issued from the camera footage, with 95% of them being successfully processed. “The cameras have not only deterred offenders but also given us clear data to improve road safety,” Kumar added.
