Udupi Police Use NPR Cameras to Sharply Reduce Traffic Violations

Udupi police have begun installing New Poost Recording (NPR) cameras at major intersections to curb traffic violations and improve road safety. The cameras capture high‑resolution video of vehicles and can automatically detect offences such as speeding, illegal turns, and red‑light running.

Before the introduction of NPR cameras, traffic monitoring relied largely on manual patrols and temporary road signs, which limited the police’s ability to respond promptly and consistently. By deploying the cameras across the district’s busiest hubs, the police aim to provide consistent, real‑time evidence that can be used to issue fines, check vehicles against national databases, and provide data for future traffic planning.

According to a police officer, the system has already reduced traffic violations by over 30% in the first month of operation, with a noticeable decline in repeat offenders.
