Udupi's crackdown: 32 illegal homestays busted in special operation

In a coordinated task force led by the Udupi district administration, 32 unregistered homestays were identified across several villages in the Udupi district during a week‑long operation announced on May 15, 2024.
These informal lodging units, which had been operating without required permits, were found to be in breach of Karnataka’s Hotel and Guest House Act. Complaints from local residents and tourism officials prompted the state tourism department to collaborate with the police, resulting in on‑site inspections and the seizure of illegal boarding facilities.
The crackdown is expected to curb the proliferation of non‑licensed accommodations, safeguarding tourists from substandard conditions and ensuring that revenue generated from tourism is properly taxed.
