Udupi’s Untreated Sewage Streamed into Arabian Sea; Upa Lokayukta Seeks Action

Concerns over environmental safety rose when untreated sewage from Udupi was discharged into the Arabian Sea during a routine maintenance operation last week, according to local reports. The incident has prompted Uda‑pi’s Upa Lokayukta to lodge 17 suo‑motu complaints against the municipal corporation and other parties involved.

The sewage discharge, attributed to a malfunction in the town’s wastewater treatment system, bypassed the residents’ sanitation infrastructure and entered the sea. Authorities say the spill occurred before 10 a.m. on the 14th of June and affected a stretch of coastline adjacent to the Marine Parade area. Investigations indicate that the town’s primary treatment plant was overwhelmed due to a sudden influx of domestic wastewater and insufficient handling capacity.
