Udupi to Impose Fines on Residents Who Fail to Stop Mosquito Breeding Amid Dengue Surge

The Udupi municipal council has announced that residents who do not clear potential mosquito breeding sites will face fines as the district sees a sharp rise in dengue cases.

Dengue fever cases in Udupi have climbed by about 20% in the last six months, prompting authorities to intensify vector control. Stagnant water in discarded containers, rainwater harvesting tanks and construction sites provides breeding ground for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Starting next month, households found with unroofed containers or other breeding sites during ward inspections may be fined up to ₹5,000. The funds collected will be used for mosquito elimination programmes and community awareness drives, officials said, hoping stricter penalties will curb the spread of the disease.
