Vandse Village Turns Household Waste Into ‘Green Gold’ with Black Soldier Flies

Villagers in Vandse, a small community in Karnataka’s Udupi district, are turning their daily kitchen scraps into a valuable resource by breeding black soldier flies (BSF).

The process involves collecting organic waste such as banana peels and rice husks, which the BSF larvae feed on; they transform the material into high‑protein meal and organic compost, useful for both human nutrition and agricultural fertiliser.

By selling the protein powder and compost, the village generates income while drastically reducing waste in landfills. The initiative also cuts methane emissions and provides a model for other rural communities. Source: Google News – Udupi.
