Finance Minister Sitharaman Launches New Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery in Udupi

On Tuesday, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman inaugurated the New Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery at Udupi, a move aimed at supporting the region’s long‑standing craft sector. The institution will provide specialised training and research facilities for gem cutting, polishing and design.

Udupi has a rich heritage in precious‑stone craftsmanship, with local artisans historically supplying gems to markets across India. The launch follows earlier state plans to promote the district as a hub for high‑quality jewellery manufacturing.
